Our Legislative Work...
I serve on several committees - Licensing and Occupations, Local Government, and Banking and Insurance.
My membership on the Licensing and Occupations Committee allows me to work with other legislators on issues that effect something very special to us - Churchill Downs. The committee also takes a look at other state issued licenses, including professional licenses issued to everyone from your hairdresser to your real estate agent.
One of the biggest issues I have had the opportunity to work on with other members of the Local Government Committee is the Louisville/Jefferson County Merger. I am a Vice Chairman of this legislative committee and I can tell you that we worked very hard to do everything we could to make the transition between individual governing bodies and a joint governing body easy. Our goal was to ensure that we protected the integrity of individual communities while allowing us to reach out to a more efficient form of government. The new Metro Council promises to bring a renewed sense of vitality to our area, allowing us to recognize the wealth of opportunities that are available in Jefferson County. There are countless quality candidates for the Council’s 26 seats and this November’s election will no doubt make history.
As an Independent Insurance Agent and small businessman, I know firsthand the problems we face with finding affordable health insurance that meets the needs of our families. I have worked as a member of the Banking and Insurance Committee to pass legislation that will attract more insurance companies to our state, increasing competition and offering Kentuckians more choices for less of their hard earned dollars. That bill, passed during last year’s session, is only the first step in what will have to be a long journey to repair the damage done to our health insurance market. Of course, the ultimate destination is affordable health insurance coverage that makes quality health care accessible to Kentuckians.
